Artist: Johnny Yen
Date of life: 1979-present (40 years old)
Johnny Yen was born in Detroit, but grew up and attended school in Warren. At the moment, he lives in a house in Charlevoix, MI that overlooks Lake Michigan. Both of his parents are devoted Catholics, and while he himself is Catholic, isn’t active in the religion. Johnny has never been to a photography class, he learned from experience. He owns a Nikon camera, and likes portrait photography the best because he gets to meet new people. He is a gun owner, and a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. He rides a Harley, without a helmet, because he believes riding without a helmet should be a choice. Johnny has shot some small weddings, but never any big ones because he thinks they’re too “stuffy”.
Johnny Yen’s photos have an old, rustic feel to them. His architecture photos are of old cabins that are up north, which give them an older look. Some of his photos are black and white, which I really like, and it just makes it look rustic. I really like the older look because, in my opinion, older photos look more mysterious. His photos remind me of the the past, because his photos contain the features of past photos.
Johnny Yen’s photos are mostly personal in my opinion. Some of his photos are of his house in Charlevoix, Michigan. Some are of his motorcycle. Others are of a lake, which makes sense since he likes on Lake Michigan. I think he’s trying to get the message across that he likes his life. He likes his motorcycle and house and wants to share it with the world.
Johnny Yen’s work has made me want to photograph more personal items. I really like how he isn’t afraid to put himself out there and take photos of his belongings. I want to be like that. I want to be able to take any picture I want without worrying about what people think. After seeing his work I realized it was okay to express yourself through your photos.

For my first image, Green Apple, I sewed a piece of red sting in between a slit in the apple, just like Johnny Yen did. But, unlike him, I put the needle in the red yarn and kept that in the picture. Johnny Yen didn’t have the yarn in the picture. Also, his stitching looks a lot better than mine. In the second photo, Modern Camera, I choose to modernize the picture. I used a new camera and new books instead of and older camera with older books, which is what Johnny did. And in my last photo, Wood Pile, my picture looks darker than Johnny’s picture. It also isn’t as organized as his.
For my photo, Green Apple, the focal point is the green apple. In the light, it looks like the apple is glowing. For Wood Pile, there’s a pattern in the wood. All the pieces of wood are stacked on top of each other. And in my photo Modern Camera, I cropped the picture so the stack of books and camera is the focal point.
